Childs Station (historical)
Lake Tahoe, Nevada was once a thriving mining town. The first people to settle in the area were the Humboldt brothers, who came from California in 1848. In 1850, the Mormon pioneers headed west and passed through the area on their way to the Gold Rush in California. When they arrived, they found that the lake had already been discovered and claimed by other miners.
The town of Tahoe City was founded in 1855 by prospectors who were looking for rich veins of gold. The original town consisted of just a few tents and shacks. It quickly grew, however, and by 1860 there were over 1,000 people living in Tahoe City.
The most important industry in Tahoe City was mining, and it was here that the town really began to prosper. By 1870, there were over 2,000 people living in Tahoe City and it had become an important stop on the route between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Despite its success as a mining town, Tahoe City eventually went into decline. This was mainly due to two factors: First, there was a general decline in mining activity throughout western America due to the discovery of new gold mines; and second, there was a severe drought which affected Tahoe City especially hard.
By 1900, only about 200 people remained in Tahoe City. However, thanks to tourism, which began to develop in the late 1800s, the town has since experienced a revival. Today
Van Sickle Station (historical)
Van Sickle Station, originally named "Lake Tahoe Junction" for the Van Sickles who operated it as a stagecoach stop on the Lincoln Highway, was situated in present-day El Dorado County. The station was established in 1879 and served passengers and freight between Reno and Lake Tahoe. In 1880, a hotel was erected at the station, which became a popular tourist destination for visitors to the area. In 1930, Van Sickle Station was closed due to deteriorating infrastructure and replaced by Stateline.
Genoa Station (historical)
Lake Tahoe's Genoa Station was once a bustling railroad town. The Genoa Railway Company platted the town in 1864, and it became an important stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad. The town prospered due to the railway connection and its location at the north end of the lake. At its peak in 1890, Genoa had a population of over 3,000 people. However, by 1900 rail traffic had declined and the town began to decline. By 1930, only a few hundred people remained. The last train stopped in Genoa Station in 1963. Today, only a few aging buildings remain, including the old railway station and a few shops. The town is now a popular Historical Site and Visitors Center for visitors to Lake Tahoe.
Mormon Station Historic State Monument
The Mormon Station Historic State Monument, located near the town of South Lake Tahoe in California, is a state park that preserves evidence of the early Latter-day Saints. The monument was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2004.
The Mormon Station Historic State Monument comprises a complex of buildings and outbuildings that were used by the Latter-day Saints from 1851 to 1857. The station served as the point of departure for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who travelled through California on their way to the Salt Lake Valley. The site also served as a supply depot and staging area for expeditions into the Sierra Nevada.
The monument includes an adobe church that was built in 1851 and a log cabin that was used as a missionary station in 1852. Other structures at the monument include a blacksmith shop, a wagon shop, and a granary.
Old Mormon Station (historical)
Lake Tahoe's Old Mormon Station is a historical site that dates back to 1852. It was the site of a trading post and supply depot for the Mormon pioneers who were traveling through the Sierra Nevada on their way to the Great Salt Lake. The station served as a stopover for the pioneers en route to California and Oregon. The site is now a historic park and museum.
